Interview

Allow me to introduce you to Caro Ramirez.

With a photography aesthetic that borders on documentary-like style with a punch of high-fashion editorial, this girl is BAD [in the best way!] She has that natural cool about her and definitely brings nothing by good vibes wherever she goes. Caro can almost always be spotted in a pair of kick ass shoes [try teal suede creepers], a vintage Tee and a pair of all over print slouchy pants: Her signature look. With a great taste in music [80s to hip hop to M83], personal style, and of course photography, this talented young photographer has no place to go but up. Check out our interview:

Tell us a little bit about Caro Ramirez? I’m from El Paso, TX and I’m a photographer currently based in San Francisco, CA. I’m terribly obsessed with the 80s and 90s, and I don’t quite remember exactly how I started doing what I do now. I studied engineering before photography, and one day I just woke up and realized I loved taking photos more than making 3-D trains on a computer.

How would you define your photography aesthetic? I feel like I’m all over the place! One day I’ll feel like photographing lots of color with androgynous models, and the next day I’m photographing black and white portraits. There’s definitely a sense color and a love for romanticism in my work.

What are the things that really inspire you? I get deeply inspired by 80s/90s hip-hop music, as well as a few other genres from that era. For me nothing beats the style from back then, so I try to keep history alive with my wardrobe. Androgyny has been something I’ve been inspired by since I was little kid. All my crushes had long hair (the first being, Atreyu, from The NeverEnding Story). Tumblr has served a great inspiration for me, I can type in a specific word and tags of it pop up from everywhere and every part of history. Positive energy is #1 though, I can’t really be around any sort of negative energy; being surrounded by people who believe in beautiful energy is great motivation for me to stay inspired daily.

What have been the highlights of your photography career? 2011 has been the best year of my career, so far. My work was published in Neo2, Harper’s Bazaar Turkey, and CMYK Magazine. Coachella 2011 was a big highlight for me, because Alexis from Sleigh Bells got me my first Coachella photo pass, so I was able to get some amazing stuff on camera of amazing artists. I got my photographs from Coachella posted on The Block Magazine’s online site, as well. I’ve also been given the opportunity to photograph b-boys from all over the world; I love b-boying and I hope that one day I can photograph for Red Bull BC One!

Where do you hope to find yourself 10 years up the road? I see myself either assisting a well-known photographer; anywhere on Earth, or as an established, photographer for all sorts of publications. As my friends and I say, “the future is bright”.

What’s one piece of advice that you can give other photographers? Stay positive, don’t make excuses, and don’t say, “I’m tired”.

Three words that describe you: FUN, OLD SCHOOL, POSITIVE
